I received an email from a colleague this morning that read:
“Paula, thought I would let you know that I was not chosen for either the Company 1 or Company 2 jobs. I was disappointed, but know the right job will come in time. Please keep me in mind.”
Here is what I responded:
“Try to talk with someone at those companies and ask them to be ABSOLUTELY honest with you, not just polite, and find out why you were not chosen. Do not take “someone else was more qualified” for an answer. What about YOU did they not choose? It may smart to hear the answer, but it is a learning experience that is unparalleled in your job search. If you try it, let me know how it goes.”
Is this a step you take? And if so do you probe and find the real answer to why you were not chosen, or do you accept the polite answer. Unfortunately the polite answer never allows you to be a better candidate for the next opportunity.
Make asking the hard question and getting to the truthful answer your 2012 New Year’s job seeking resolution.
My best to you and yours, this Holiday Season. P.
