Take the Wheel: Interview Preparation Part 1

As we agreed last week, the face to face interview is the centerpiece of the successful job search process.  Without saying, being prepared is the best way you have to have most impact on the outcome of the interview. Do as many of these preps as possible in the time you have to get ready.

    Be ready for the interview:

    • Check out the company website and do research to learn about the history and growth over the years. Free profiles available through websites like Yahoo Finance.
    • Search for relevant press releases.
    • Review any notes you have surrounding the interviewers you will meet. Be sure to look at their LinkedIn profiles, look for point of interest between you and the interviewer(s).
    • Try to understand the interviewer’s roles within the organization so in the interview you will be able to answer their questions with a bent toward their area of expertise.
    • Is the job in your industry? If so, someone you know is likely to know your interviewer (s). Check them out.
    • Re-read the job description so you can fit your background most effectively to their needs.
    • Be ready with 3 success stories from past jobs. Make them short in the format: this is the problem I saw, this is the solution I put in place, these are the results I got. (More on this most important point next week.)
    • Be ready with questions for each interviewer that focus on responsibility related issues not “what’s in it for me” questions.

You’ll be ready now.  Good luck!
